About Treshnish Isles Special Protection Area

The Treshnish Isles Special Protection Area (SPA) is a group of small islands located in the Inner Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland near the Isle of Mull. This protected site is internationally recognized for its important seabird populations, under the designation of a Special Protection Area by Scottish Natural Heritage, primarily for its role in conserving breeding colonies of species such as puffins, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, and Arctic terns. The islands include Lunga, Cairn na Burgh Mòr, Cairn na Burgh Beag, Fladda, Bac Mòr, and others, each featuring striking volcanic geology and cliff-lined coastlines. The area supports rich marine life as well, including grey seals and occasional sightings of bottlenose dolphins and whales in surrounding waters.

Historically, the islands were used for crofting and grazing, but today they remain largely uninhabited except for occasional scientific researchers and seasonal wildlife wardens. Access to the isles is mostly by boat from nearby locations such as Staffa or Ulva, with guided wildlife tours offering close encounters with seabird colonies during the breeding season. Hiking on the islands is limited and informal, usually requiring careful attention to sensitive wildlife habitat. The Treshnish Isles are prized by birdwatchers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts seeking remote natural beauty and an immersive experience in Scotland's marine environment. Visitors should prepare for variable weather and follow strict biosecurity measures to protect the fragile ecosystems here.
